SUMMARY:Ralph Friesen Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join the Mennonite Heritage Village in celebrating the launch of Ralph Friesen’s new book\, “Prosperity Ever – Depression Never”: Steinbach in the 1930s. \nMonday\, Oct. 7\, 7pm at the Mennonite Heritage Village. The evening will feature a presentation by the author and light refreshments. \n \nBook description: \n“The village of Steinbach\, Manitoba\, defied the odds in the Depression years\, actually growing and progressing during that devastating time. How did this happen? Friesen’s book provides an explanation for this unique phenomenon\, with a detailed chapter on the village’s “backbone”—it’s Main Street\, where commerce was conducted and small entertainments could be found. The story moves from one end of the street to the other\, using the original lots of the 1874 pioneers as a structure on which to hang various facts and anecdotes. \nAs well\, memoirs of writers who were children during the Depression\, like Erich Vogt\, Al Reimer\, Ernest Neufeld\, Glen Kehler\, Elizabeth Bartel Reimer\, Hedi Dyck Knoop\, the diaries of watchmaker/Kleine Gemeinde minister P. D. Friesen\, and articles and letters from the Steinbach Post provide depth and detail. Photographs of the era\, including natural features\, streets\, buildings\, machines\, gardens and of course the people of Steinbach in the era of the 1930s\, help the reader visualize people and events. Detailed maps give the reader reference points to the places and geographic features described in the text. The project is unique in drawing upon this rich mixture of original sources. \nThe arc of the story shows the decisive transition of the village of Steinbach from a somewhat isolated Mennonite village toward a modern community on the Canadian prairies. At the same time it shows that Steinbach maintained a strong Mennonite identity with residual elements of tradition and past practices.” \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch - "On Stony Ground: Russländer Mennonites and the Rebuilding of Community in Grunthal" by James Urry
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 18th for the book launch of James Urry’s new ethnographic publication\, On Stony Ground: Russländer Mennonites and the Rebuilding of Community in Grunthal\, published by University of Toronto Press. \n  \nThe publisher’s description reads: \nOn Stony Ground presents a historical ethnographic account of a generation of Mennonites from the Soviet Union who\, following Russia’s revolution and civil war\, immigrated to Manitoba during the 1920s. James Urry examines how they came to terms with a new land and with their new neighbours\, including other Mennonites\, Ukrainians\, French Canadians\, and Indigenous Peoples. \nThe book discusses the impact of the Great Depression and how the immigrants struggled with their identity in Canada as Hitler and Stalin rose to power in Germany and the USSR. It reveals the immigrants’ desire to maintain their faith\, language\, and culture while encouraging their children to take advantage of an education conducted mainly in English. On Stony Ground explores how prosperity following the Second World War helped the immigrants to build a community in conjunction with others\, including Mennonites and non-Mennonites\, and to accept their new home in Canada. \nCome and enjoy a presentation of the text by James Urry\, livestreamed from New Zealand\, and enjoy dialogue and refreshments. \n \nAbout the author: James Urry (originally from London\, England) is a New Zealand anthropologist\, historian\, author and a former professor and current adjunct research fellow at the School of Social and Cultural Studies at Victoria University of Wellington in Wellington\, New Zealand. Urry is a world authority on the history of Russian Mennonites. \n
