SUMMARY:All My Relations Series: Unpacking the Doctrine of Discovery with Josh Dueck
DESCRIPTION:The Doctrine of Discovery has become a buzzword in the media and in conversations connected to Truth and Reconciliation. This evening’s conversation will unpack this and better equip Settler-Canadians in more thoroughly understanding how historic wrongs (including the church) have created present barriers for Indigenous people. It will challenge us to consider what our next steps are towards meaningful reconciliation. \n  \nNo registration required

SUMMARY:Leaving Canada Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Format: Webinar \nFor the fourth installment of the “Leaving Canada” speaker series\, Andrea Klassen\, senior curator of Mennonite Heritage Village\, will explore the interactions between Mennonite colonists in northern Mexico and their Mexican neighbours as depicted in the immigrant newspaper Die Steinbach Post. Drawing on her study of letters published in the Post from Mennonites in Mexico to their relatives and friends in Canada between 1922 and 1967\, Klassen will describe how Mennonite encounters with their neighbours – in the marketplace\, in conflicts with thieves and the state\, and through informal relationships between individuals – had the effect of creating a cohesive religious and cultural identity and strengthening Mennonites’ self-perception as an ethnic minority living on foreign soil. \nThis is an online event (a Zoom webinar). Register to attend through the form on this page\, September 27\, at 7 pm CDT. Click here to register. \nFrom June to November\, with support from the Plett Foundation\, Centre for Transnational Mennonite Studies and Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) are showing “Leaving Canada: The Mennonite Migration to Mexico\,” a special exhibit that explores this momentous event\, in its various dimensions\, featuring artefacts\, historical photographs from public archives and private collections\, and original interpretative content. \n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n

Focusing especially on Manitoba Colony\, Kevin will describe the continuities and changes of Mennonite life in Mexico over the past century. \nThis speaker series is being held in conjunction with Mennonite Heritage Village’s special exhibit “Leaving Canada: The Mennonite Migration to Mexico\,” which runs from June to November.
