Education Program Assistant

The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV), located in Steinbach, MB, is an interpretive centre and open-air museum whose mission is to relate the story of the Russian Mennonites and their settlement in Manitoba. The museum has a collection of over 16,000 artefacts, more than 30 buildings and historical features on a 40-acre site, as well as two indoor galleries and numerous display areas. This position is responsible to assist the Education Program Coordinator, to organize and facilitate the education school program, school tours for children of all ages, and the Pioneer Day Camps safely and efficiently, and to work with volunteers and interpreters cooperatively. It will require varied work shifts on weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. This job is for students intending to return to college or university in September. Full-time seasonal from May 1 – September 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma an asset
  • Training in developing and administering education programs an asset

Experience:

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in the not-for-profit sector preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in classroom education preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in museum education preferred

Deliverables and Responsibilities

Deliverable 1 – Education Program Facilitation and Coordination

Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with the museum galleries, heritage buildings, and grounds by attending staff training and volunteer training sessions
  • Assist the Education Program Coordinator with all education program activities
  • Assist the Education Program Coordinator with all Pioneer day camp activities
  • Develop new education program activities in collaboration with the Program Coordinator
  • Provide coverage for unfilled volunteer positions
  • Prepare for and facilitate a Kids Tent at all MHV events and festivals
  • Prepare an end-of-season report evaluating education programs and summer day camps, including key outcomes, observations, and recommendations
  • Provide Payroll with timely information for hours worked

Deliverable 2 – Organize Volunteers

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Education Program Coordinator with contacting and organizing volunteer interpreters for school programs and tours
  • Orient volunteers in preparation for school programs and tours
  • Monitor and enforce safety for children and volunteers while on MHV grounds

Deliverable 3 – Village Interpretation and Demonstration

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and/or demonstrate in a variety of heritage buildings at the discretion of the Program Coordinator
  • Interact with visitors in an engaging manner
