Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) to kickoff 150th anniversary year with Indigenous Kairos Blanket Exercise
Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024 – 2 PM at Mennonite Heritage Village
150 years ago (1874) Mennonites arrived in Manitoba and were helped by local settlers and the Métis. To commemorate this major anniversary, MHV will be hosting several events throughout the year. The first one will be to learn about and honour our Indigenous hosts and their experiences of the past two centuries through an engaging activity using blankets.
The Kairos Blanket Exercise is an interactive group experience designed to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact history, treaty-making, displacement, and contemporary Indigenous realities and resurgence. Everyone is actively involved to the extent they are able, but don’t need to prepare anything. The experience will include some content specific to Manitoba and Mennonites in the province. The time will also include sharing by Elder Karen Jolly (Métis) from Niverville and a chance to collectively reflect on the experience.
